Why Rotoscope Here
Draw it once, Follow it through
Click around the subject, then press Follow ▶ (or ◀ Follow to go backward). It tracks corners inside the shape and moves the whole outline with them, putting a key about every eighth of a second. Where it is not sure — a cut, or the subject covered too long — it stops and says where, so you can fix the shape there and follow on.
Keyframes you can still edit
Follow only writes keys. Drag a point at any time to correct the shape; it glides between keys. Add a point by shift-clicking an edge, delete one with alt-click, move the whole shape with Cmd/Ctrl-drag. Undo restores the shape exactly as it was before a Follow.
Snap to edges
A hand-drawn outline is rarely right to the pixel. Snap to edges pulls its soft edge onto the edges in the picture, so a rough shape hugs the subject. It runs on a paused frame and in the export.
Add, subtract, intersect
Up to twelve shapes. Add keeps what is inside, Subtract cuts a part out (a hand over the subject, a pole in front of it), Intersect keeps only where two overlap. Edge softness and a smooth-curve switch shape each one.
Fix the AI cut-out
Shapes can sit on top of the AI person cut-out or a green screen key and fix the part they got wrong: a missing arm, a stray piece of background.
Then use the cut
Replace the background (blur, a colour, your image or video, a studio backdrop), or keep a grade, a glow, horror light or blood to just the shape. Shapes are saved with your project and exported like any other cut.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is rotoscoping?
Tracing a subject frame by frame, or between keyframes, to cut it out of a shot or to keep an effect to it. This tool lets you draw the outline, then follows the subject through the clip so you do not have to key it by hand.
How do I rotoscope a video for free?
Open the tool, load your clip, choose Rotoscope under Background › Cut out, click around the subject and press Enter. Press Follow to carry the shape through the clip, then fix any frame where it drifts by dragging a point.
Does Follow work on any footage?
It works best on a subject with some texture or detail: a person, an object, a logo. A flat-coloured shape with nothing inside it gives it little to hold on to and it will drift or stop. It follows slides, turns and zooms, and carries on through something passing in front for a moment. It stops at a cut and tells you.
Is there a watermark, or an upload?
No watermark and no upload. Decoding, following and export all run in your browser on your device.
Can I export the cut-out with a transparent background?
Export as MP4 or WebM with the background replaced by a colour, an image or a video, or a green screen to key in another editor. A transparent-background export is not offered yet.
